Oncology Massage 1 & 2 (2 days / 14 CE credit hours) Introduction and Basics (Day 1) Sadly, we all know someone undergoing a cancer diagnosis or treatment. You can help with the correct training and assessment skills. Provide a safe and effective treatment plan. Know indications, contraindication, modifications, what is safe for someone undergoing treatment and what is not. do you integrate massage into the patient’s overall treatment plan? How do you get medical How clearance? will learn gentle and therapeutic massage techniques to offer a safe oncology massage therapy session. • Oncology Massage: o helps clients assimilate medications more effectively, o eases the effects of radiation/chemotherapy, o helps reduce client’s nausea, o prepares the body for the traumatic effects of and recovery from surgery, o improves mind-body awareness, o lifts spirits mentally and emotionally, o facilitates a more positive experience when integrated into the patient’s overall treatment plan with their Oncology Treating Team. o And more. Beyond the Basics (Day 2) In this class you will learn a few more gentle and therapeutic techniques that are safe for your clients with a cancer diagnosis, undergoing cancer treatment, or recovering from cancer treatment. In this Beyond the Basics class we will address: o the effects of depression and anxiety on the cancer patient and how to stay within your Scope of Practice; o the physiological effects of cancer drugs and treatments that may cause constipation and the need for safe abdominal massage, which will be taught; o how to safely work around colostomy bags, chemo ports, surgical dressings, etc.; o modifications, use of props for safe, effective relief; o how to design an effective treatment plan. This class is hands-on, so bring your table and hands-on supplies, 3-4 pillows, 4 hand towels, 1 bath towel, dress comfortably for hands-on exchange and practice. Be prepared to actively participate to level up your massage and bodywork therapy skills!
